SUMMARY:New members evening
DESCRIPTION:For new members\, old members\, potential members\, anyone who wants to find out more about what the group gets up to\, and how to get involved\, whether that’s with surveys\, box checks\, bat care\, leading bat walks or just learning more about bats. There will also be a short committee meeting immediately beforehand\, starting at 19:00. \nAfter we’ve covered summer projects\, public engagement\, bat care\, NBMP surveys\, training & licensing\, etc.\, if the weather is suitable we’ll head down to the Whiteknights lake with bat detectors to see what bats we can find – there are usually good views of at least three species\, sometimes more. In the event of poor weather there will be some education bats on show\, if Covid guidelines permit. \nThe meeting room is on the 1st floor of Park House\, building 8 on the Whiteknights campus map https://www.reading.ac.uk/about/visit-us.aspx. Getting to the Whiteknights campus from the town centre by bus is easy https://www.reading.ac.uk/about/visit-us. SUMMARY:Box checks at Clayfield
DESCRIPTION:Claire is undertaking a year of monthly box checks at Clayfield and Blackhouse copses in Caversham\, Reading where we put up 14 boxes in 2011. There are at least five species using the woods and we have found soprano pips & long-eared bats roosting in the boxes. As some have come down or need repair we are planning to put up another 20 boxes in March 2023. \nIf you would like to come and help please email battyclairea@gmail.com. As numbers may still be limited it will be appreciated if you only sign up once you are sure you are able to come. Handling of any bats found during the winter will be minimal\, the rest of the year it will be restricted to those with up-to-date rabies vaccination.\n \n2022\n18 September\n16 October\n13 November\n18 December \n2023\n28 January\n26 February\n26 March (also putting up extra boxes) \n30 April\n28 May\n25 June\n30 July\n27 August\n24 September

SUMMARY:Training: NBMP surveys
DESCRIPTION:Want to do bat surveys or learn more about bat echolocation? \nJoin us for a training session on the National Bat Monitoring Programme where Philip Briggs from BCT will deliver the “Using Your Ears” introductory bat detector workshop. This is aimed particularly at anyone considering taking part in the Field or Waterway surveys hoping to gain more confidence using a heterodyne detector and will consist of a classroom session followed by practical fieldwork. Bring your own detector if you have one but there will be detectors available to borrow for the evening. \nWe will also include a section on the Roost Count survey in June as we’re planning to revisit some of the sites where we rescued baby bats last season. There may be a chance to count bats out of a bat roost on campus. \nPlease let us know if you’re coming at info@berksbats.org.uk so we can make sure there are enough knowledgable volunteers to help with the practical session! Also there is a limit to the number of people we can fit in the room.

In the event of poor weather there will be some education bats on show\, if Covid guidelines permit. \nThe meeting room is on the 1st floor of Park House\, building 8 on the Whiteknights campus map https://www.reading.ac.uk/about/visit-us.aspx. SUMMARY:Winter talk: Bats in trees with Keith Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Winter talk : Bats in trees with Keith Cohen \nTuesday\, 22 February 19:30-21:00 via Zoom \nWhere are the bats in trees ? \nIt used to be said that to find bats in trees you should look in big ancient trees but recently a very different picture of where bats can be found in trees has been revealed\, and some examples are really game-changing for surveyors and for habitat management. \nBased on his own observations over the last few years\, and the shared observations of others\, the talk is aimed at sharing recent eye-opening observations of where bats roost in trees\, what features are important\, which species of tree and how occupancy can vary. \nHow low is too low ?  How thin is too thin ?  Is a sycamore as good as an ash as an oak ? \nAimed at both batty folk and those involved in woodland or tree management\, whether making decisions or actively felling. Including thermal camera and endoscope footage. \nKeith has been a licensed bat worker since 1993\, found his first tree roost in about 2000\, undertakes tree surveys as volunteer and consultant\, and monitors a site with an ever increasing number of known tree roosts (currently 81). \nAll are welcome to attend. Zoom joining instructions will be sent out to members and added to our Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/groups/BerkshireSouthBuckinghamshireBatGroup/events) on the day. If you are not a member and don’t use FaceBook but would like to attend\, please email info@berksbats.org.uk \nBechstein’s bat maternity group in old woodpecker hole (tree GLW 71 [00295]) – aerial of radio-tagged bat ‘Sansa’ is just visible at lower left. SUMMARY:New members evening/bat walk Tues 27 April
DESCRIPTION:As we can’t have our usual indoor meeting to introduce new and potential members to the bat group and its activities\, thanks to Covid restrictions\, we’re going to hold a socially-distanced bat walk at Dinton Pastures instead on Tuesday 27 April\, starting at 8pm. There’ll be one leader to every 5 new/potential members and we’ll try and provide an idea of what the group gets up to while watching and listening to the bats. Each group\, assuming there’s more than one\, will walk a different route. Bat detectors and help using them will be provided. \nIt’s free to attend but numbers are restricted so please contact info(at)berksbats.org.uk for more details. Joining details will be sent out to those who’ve signed up. We have permission to be on site after dark!
