SUMMARY:The Invisible Mammal
DESCRIPTION:Earley Environmental Group & the bat group are hosting a screening of the feature film The Invisible Mammal\, a beautifully filmed multi-stranded story of bat conservation in the USA\, but with relevance to what we are doing here in the UK. The event in the Palmer Building at the University of Reading is free to attend but we ask you to book a place via Eventbrite where you will also find details of how to reach the venue. \nAgainst the backdrop of a global pandemic and the sixth mass extinction\, filmmaker Kristin Tièche explores the crucial roles that bats play in our shared environment\, and how a team of women bat scientists set out to save a North American bat species from a deadly fungal disease called white-nose syndrome (WNS) to create a better future for both bats and humans. \nAt once a nature film\, a science film\, and a character-driven adventure film\, The Invisible Mammal will immerse you in the world of bats and forever change the way you feel about these amazing little creatures. \nMembers of the bat group will be on hand to answer questions about bat conservation in the UK following the screening.

SUMMARY:Winter talk: Bats in the city
DESCRIPTION:Martha Gallardo Galaviz from Kings College London is joining us to talk about her PhD research on how Soprano pipistrelles (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) navigate London’s complex network of parks\, rivers\, roads\, and lights and what this can tell us about urban nature. \n \nUsing 13 months of acoustic monitoring across 15 London parks\, this talk explores soprano pipistrelle activity and the urban habitats the bats rely on. From weather and lighting to park design and human activity\, discover what shapes bat activity across the selected parks. The findings show how both large and small green spaces contribute to London’s ecological network\, support bats\, and offer insights into how cities can better balance biodiversity conservation with human use. \nAll welcome to attend! \nWe meet on the 1st floor of Park House at the University of Reading which is building 8 on the University of Reading campus map. Park House has a bar on the ground floor where visitors are is welcome; bat group members sometimes congregate there before a talk. \nIf driving\, the postcode RG6 6UR will get you on to campus but not to the right building so we recommend using what3words ///return.factories.slows for the entrance to campus\, then ///hails.hogs.jacket for car park no. 15 and ///echo.hats.tidy for the pedestrian entrance to Park House. Parking is unrestricted after 5pm. \nThere is information on buses to campus.
